The really important historical connection

This dinner took place at an extraordinary moment in King's life.

On March 23, 1965, King was participating in the Selma-to-Montgomery voting-rights march. According to the auction records I found, he temporarily left the march to travel to Cleveland for this fundraising dinner, with proceeds benefiting the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and then returned to Alabama.
